  • Plant blackberries 2-3 feet apart in a row and 8-10 feet between rows.  Work up the soil as deep as possible.  Mark off rows and dig your holes for the plants.  Put the plant in the prepared hole with roots spread naturally.  Water the plant and fill the hold with moist top soil and then firm soil with your hands.  Do not put fertilizer in the hole with the plants.  Fertilize after the plants start to green up and grow.  Fertilize lightly the first time and do not put fertilizer directly on the plants.  Remove old canes after they have borne fruit each summer.
