Dig a trench 12 inches wide and 6-8 inches deep. Place crowns in trench 15-24 inches apart on slight mounds of soil, making the crowns higher than the roots. Spread out roots and cover with 2-3 inches of soil. Firm down. As plants grow, pull more soil into the trench until filled. Harvest when spears are 5-9 inches tall by breaking off at soil level.
